Prospects of personal genomics in Pakistan

As a result of revolutionary advancements in high-throughput sequencing technologies, the field of personal genomics has an enormous growth potential in coming years. This has been made possible due to exponential reduction in cost and time for whole genome sequencing (WGS). However, the data analyses to infer mutations with clinical manifestations–particularly in cases where a person with no clinical symptoms wants to know the risks of getting possible diseases–remain a challenge. Cheaper commercial alternatives to WGS are available, such as those offered by 23ANDME.

“Anty-Biotics” from the Tiniest Warriors of Planet Earth

Around 50% of antibiotics worldwide, are being brought to the black market in countries like Asia, South Africa, where they are often sold over the counter without the prescription, perturbing the Global Health Economy due to rising concerns towards antibiotic resistance.

HIV and HCV Co-infection

Pakistan, despite being classified as the low prevalence and high-risk country, is now in the concentrated phase of HIV epidemic with nearly one in fourth injection drug users in an urban setting of Pakistan HIV-positive. Regardless of the low prevalence rate of HIV in general population, reports show local outbreak among injection drug users (IDU) whose linkages and sexual networking in the general population makes Pakistan vulnerable to the treatment of a generalized epidemic.

Green Nano-biotics from Olive leave extracts-A Next Generation Antimicrobial Drug against Multidrug-Resistant Gram-Negative Bacteria

Nosocomial infections, caused by multi drug-resistant (MDR) bacteria are posing alarming threats worldwide, with a waning global health and cost burden as they are sixth leading cause of death worldwide. Moreover, current antibiotics treatments against gram negative resistant infections are further leading to the dramatic wave in antibiotic resistant species and strains. Both planktonic bacteria as well as bacterial biofilms are some of the major challenges for both diagnosis and treatment, in both biomedicine and current antimicrobial therapies. Today, even the best available antibiotic of the 21Ist Colistin (polymyxin E) which is currently used as a ‘last line resort’ in the treatment of MDR infections are gradually becoming resistant, against MDR gram-negative bacteria. In current antimicrobial therapies, amphipathic antibiotic drugs are becoming resistant due to their poor penetration through outer cell membrane only present in such gram-negative bacteria. Green nanobiotechnology using Plant waste material, particularly Leave Extracts has, therefore, emerged as an excellent cost-effective and non-toxic paradigm for the formulation of 'Green Nanobiotic' against virulent Gram-negative MDR strains. Currently, I am carrying out my Project on the biogenic formulation of biogenic PEG coated-Colistin loaded Silver nanoparticles using Olive Leaf Extracts. The Research is being carried under the Supervision of Pro.Dr Bushra Mirza from the Department of Biochemistry, Quaid-E-Azam University and Co-supervision of Dr.Shahid Waseem, the Managing Director of Alpha Genomic Laboratory Private Limited.

Early Diagnosis of Heart Attack by Innovative Membrane Test Strips

With the growing global concerns among people with cardiovascular diseases, the development of Membrane strips could not only allow medical professionals to rapidly analyze mixtures of biologically active compounds but such analytical biotechnology-based method could be potentially quite active and easy to use, could be applied in an ambulance or even at home. A batch of experimental test samples is currently undergoing pre-clinical trials. Furthermore, such inventions can also help in the rapid diagnosis in women who are at a greater risk than are men.

DNA Test: Disguise to a Verdict

Be aware! A mistakenly discovered molecule can change your whole fate. DNA (Deoxy Ribonucleic Acid) is a nano ranged zigzag stretch of phosphate decorated with beads of sugars and bases, conserved with genetic information’s. DNA was discovered by Swiss physician Friedrich Miescher in 1869 while he was working on building blocks of life. DNA test was developed by Sir Alec Jeffreys in 1984 and also known as DNA finger printing and DNA profiling.

Amplicon-Seq: A cost-effective and better substitute of sanger sequencing for population genetics studies

Sanger sequencing has been a gold standard of DNA sequencing for decades. However the Next-generation sequencing (NGS) has replaced the Sanger Sequencing in projects involving whole genome sequencing in recent decade. Besides whole genome sequencing (of plants, animals, microbes, etc.), a range of other NGS applications have made their way in sequencing, including transcriptome sequencing, exome sequencing, metagenomics, RNA-Seq, and customized disease panels.

Flow Cytometry: Application in Biological Sciences

Flowcytometry is a state of the art technique which generates real time data for the user and better than immuno-fluorescence which gives qualitative information.. The laser based technique which measures the various characters of a particle, cell or an organell as small as in nano-meters. Since last four decades, flowcytometry revolutionized the field of biological sciences. Immunologists, molecular biologists and the scientists working in the field of medical science research have used this technique to explore the in depth characters of their samples.

Woman beats cancer using TURMERIC after stopping all treatment

A woman who has been suffering from blood cancer for a decade has finally stalled the terminal disease, that too with the help of turmeric. Dieneke Ferguson shares her story of how she's finally living a normal life after giving up on treatments that just wore her down without any success. Ferguson, the owner of a non-profit foundation that helps artists make their work, believes more research should be carried out so doctors can finally recommend the spice to their patients.
She said: "I hope my story will lead to more people finding out about the amazing health benefits of curcumin."

Entrepreneurship: an alternative profession for PhD graduates

Knowledge economy is an asset of nations. Potentially, PhD graduates can drive economic change in a society through commercialization of their benchtop research. Shrinkage of job market and subsequent unemployment for PhD graduates exhibits an unhealthy social impact in Pakistan. Sad but true. Academia in Pakistan must revise the class room training pattern. PhD graduates usually prefer an academic position to pursue their life long career. Why they are fanatically hung up with the idea of job?

Circulating tumor cells (CTC) are rare and heterogeneous cells found in the peripheral blood of cancer patients. They are supposed to be central component of metastatic dissemination and have been correlated with the prognosis, progression-free survival and treatment efficacy in different solid tumor.CTC in the blood of patients are both signal flares for the existence of a tumor and harbingers of metastasis.

Malaria: a global health burden

Malaria is amongst a few major health burdens around the globe.  According to WHO, there were over 200 million malaria cases reported in 2015 with around 0.4 million deaths toll. Over 90% deaths are reported in Africa where menifestation of malaria infection can be seen in different forms.  Malaria infection in the children under age of 5 is very lethal.

Design of a Startup -I

As an entrepreneur, the design, components and mechanics of a startup are very important questions to me. How should we build-up a startup? What should be the foundation stone of the startup? What are the factors to make it successful? Do we need cofounders? How should we choose a cofounder? These types of questions are often challenging our brains during the process of startup design. Following pivotal factors should be kept in mind, if you are planning to start a startup.
